Dangers Of A.I. Surveillance

Sign our letter to the Prime Minister of Australia to Ban A.I. Surveillance.

1. A.I. SURVEILLANCE IS A TOOL OF DICTATORS

Anchor1

A.I. surveillance of the general public is criminal, unethical and a clear breach of human rights.

A.I. surveillance is similar to wearing a tracking ankle bracelet, but much worse. A.I. surveillance not only knows where you are, but what you’re doing, who you’re with, what you’re saying and every expression you make. You are monitored like a prisoner  You are effectively on parole and watched incase you do anything outside set "conditions." Those who set the conditions are beyond reproach and also able to make things worse for you. There will be nothing you can do about it.

A.I. surveillance is inordinately dangerous. The idea that it will protect you from crime is false. It may only help you stay safe from petty crime but it will make you easily suseptable to enourmous malfaesance and violations. In the same way as protecting your personal information and identity from potential scammers, you should protect your right to anonimity and freedom from your government and corporations. Too much information in their hands gives them unprecedented powers to remove your democratic and human rights.

If you have nothing to hide, you should not be treated like a prisoner. A.I. surveillance is used in Australia’s highest security prison. If you are a law abiding citizen, you have the right to privacy and freedom from being monitored.

Tracking every single thing you do gives the government immense powers over you and society. Accepting A.I. surveillance is surrendering yourself to authority forever.

Powers can extend to:

  1. Control of your finances and access to credit.

  2. Control of your movement and right to travel.

  3. Contol over your freedom of speech and ability to access social networks.

  4. Control over who you wish to associate with and who you speak to.
  5. Control over your purchases.

  6. Control over your access to services.

  7. Control over your right to protest.

  8. Control over your ability to reject A.I. surveillance in the future.

A.I. surveillance is the most oppressive surveillance in human history. It must be banned from use in our free country.

Authoritarian State

AI surveillance is the most oppressive and authoritarian surveillance tool in the history of the world. Never before has such a powerful tool existed that identifies, monitors, analyses, scrutinates and records an infinite amount of information on every single individual in society.

Our ancestors went to war to fight for our freedom. An authoritarian state is precisely the enemy they gave their lives to defeat. A.I. surveillance is a tool of dictatorship and oppression.

AI surveillance takes power away from the individual and creates an unprecedented amount of power to authority and corporations. The role of elected government representatives is to implement the wishes of the people. The government is acting without a mandate to remove power and control from people. This is an abomination of our democracy and their duty to serve the people.

Under the guise of ‘public safety’ each individual will lose anonymity, freedom and power to hold authority to account. It is the most dangerous technology and precedent in human history.

Once everyone in society is individually monitored, they can easily be controlled and oppressed.

Invasion of Privacy

Applying A.I. to existing surveillance cameras profoundly alters their current use and privacy considerations. For example, the use of CCTV cameras in public spaces is not unreasonably intrusive in society. With CCTV cameras, a person remains mostly anonymous until an authority desires to attach identities to images. However, combined with facial recognition software, cameras are transformed into a tool that is expressly privacy invasive. Every individual is immediately identified, tracked and monitored. All of their private movements, conversations etc. are recorded. Regardless of having not committed any offence, every individual completely loses their right to privacy.

Big Brother

AI surveillance is George Orwell’s 1984 Big Brother.

Big Brother is a character and symbol in George Orwell‘s dystopian novel 1984. He is the leader of a totalitarian state where in the ruling party wields total power over the inhabitants. The ubiquitous slogan “Big Brother is watching you“ serves as a constant reminder that people are not entitled to privacy.+

AI surveillance treats all citizens as potential criminals rather than law abiding citizens. It is overbearing and unrelenting. Just as an overbearing family member, partner or employer can be incessant at watching and controlling an individual’s behaviour, A.I. surveillance is intimidating, harrying and unwelcome in our lives.

2. BEYOND SURVEILLANCE AND TOTAL CONTROL

A.I. surveillance has ability to identify patterns unseen to the human eye and collect greater information about individuals than intended. It can analyse your emotions, the way you walk, the people you associate with, the things that interest you, the things you fear etc.. This means that information being collected may extend well beyond what is originally accepted or disclosed by individuals. That information may also be used in ways not agreed to.

A.I. surveillance has the ability to collect far more information about you than your doctor, your family and friends and know more about you than you know yourself. The danger of giving anyone access to immense personal information is incomprehendable and unparralled.

With deep access to your personal information, each individual can easily be manipulated and controlled without their consent or knowledge.

Reverse Engineering

A.I. surveillance can collect information that can be used to probe into your private and past history. Personal data observed can be analysed by A.I. systems to determine probable health conditions, family medical history, traits, family connections and more.

Watching and studying everything you do gives access to authorites knowing much more than they are entiteld to.

Anchor3

A.I. surveillance will change the way that humans interact in society. Knowing that you are being identified, monitored and recorded infringes on the ability to make choices freely.

You are no longer free. Places you visit, people you speak to, purchases you make are likely to change when you know it is being recorded and linked to your personal identification. Furthermore, you will have very limited knowledge of who has access to all your information.

A.I. surveillance stops people challenging the norms, regardless of wrong or right. It coerces people to comply with any set of conditions simply out of fear. The conditions may be set by only a few in authority. Compliance is falsely rewarded as 'good behaviour’ and challenging the government is labelled  ‘bad behaviour’.

Government powers over the public will be multiplied exponentially simply because the public become extremely fearful and wary of authority. Freedom of; expression, speech, movement and travel, will be repressed on its own, even without government placing restrictions. The general public will self-censor in fear. Despite being a law abiding citizen with nothing to hide, the implications of being tracked and traced will influence your behaviour and impact society in a negative way.

Our free way of life as we know it will change for the worse.

Oppressive Culture

A.I. surveillance is an infinitely powerful tool to control every person on an individual level and oppress our free society. Communities and groups can be easily disbanded and demobilized. A.I. surveillance forces society into a one size fits all future.

The Government False Premise that A.I. Surveillance can be used Ethically.

People are being psychologically conditioned to believe there is no way to stop A.I. surveillance. Government discussion is on “ethical application” rather than the criminality of tracking individuals.

The deliberate focus on a false suppositon, is a psychological tactic designed to coerce you into accept being personally tracked and monitored.

The general public get the feeling that they are powerless to stop the technology. The media and government narrative is designed to give you a false sense that the future cannot be shaped by you and inevitably you will need to accept being tracked and monitored. This is not true.

Government debate and media articles are based on a false premise. You can stop the government from using this technology. Tracking and monitoring you is unethical and a breach of your human rights. It is not ethical or appropriate to identify, track and monitor free citizens. You have the power to BAN being tracked and traced.

A.I. surveillance must be banned across the entire free world. It is highly criminal and illegal to identify, track and monitor free citizens.

The Australian Federal Police were Caught Lying

In 2023 the Australian Federal Police came under fire from the Australian Privacy Commissioner for secretly using A.I. facial recognition technology to build a dataset from photos on people’s social media without their consent and permission.

After they ceased using the practise they were discovered to have been secretly meeting with US tech company ‘Clearview’ that let them search billions of illegally obtained images scraped from social media platforms. NSW, Victoria and Queensland police continue to use the US company’s services although they obtain facial recognition data without consent which is considered illegal in Australia.

The Law Council Call for an Immediate Moratorium

The Law Council of Australia have called for a moratorium on the use of facial recognition in high risk decision making and for the Australian Federal Government to immediately regulate A.I. biometric technology including ‘social scoring.’  Social scoring systems classify people based on their social behaviors or personal characteristics. No government moratorium or regulations have been implemented.

The Identity-Matching Services Bill 2019 was intended to provide the legislative underpinning for the use of facial recognition technology by Commonwealth authorities based on a Government database. However, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security in 2019 recommended it be redrafted to address the lack of attention to privacy and human rights safeguards. There were reports in 2020 that the database continued to be built regardless. As of 2023, the website idmatch.gov.au states that relevant services are already available, and that the ‘full range of services will become available to government agencies over the next two years’, despite the Identity Matching Services Bill having lapsed in 2022.

The Australian Government Spy on Citizens

The Encryption Act, rushed through federal parliament in December 2018, gave law enforcement and intelligence agencies unprecedented access to communications technology. Telecommunications providers must now provide potentially unlimited back doors into private data. They must also, by law, conceal that they have done so from customers/citizens.

Wrongful Identification and Stolen Identity

With A.I. surveillance, people will be wrongfully identified or have their identity stolen. This can lead to severe wrongful punishment with limited ability to prove one’s innocence. Access to your finances, services, internet, travel, purchases, etc.. can all be severly affected by wrongful identification.

Alogorithms Cause Human Distress

Where humans have historically been able to exercise a high degree of control over data processing, the infinite amount of data collected by A.I. surveillance means this may no longer be the case.

Less human oversight over data processing can create potentially catastrophic inacuracies and widespread public distress. Australians experienced such a catastrophy when "Robodebt" (refering to a now invalidated Australian government scheme that used automated systems) was ruled unlawful.

Discrimination and Bias

A.I. technology can be corrupted by attacks or deliberate naferious programming. A.I. surveillance can be used to discriminate against people's race, financial status, associations, political views, religeous beliefs, etc...

Burden Of Defending Your Innocence

Just as a telephone answering service might be frustrating, A.I. surveillance has the power to impact humans greatly potentially turning an individual’s life into a living nightmare. When assigned critical tasks and decisions that involve humans they cannot use discretion, empathy, understanding or compassion.

Challenging computer run surveillance will be a lengthy and burdsome prospect. Challenging speeding or camera fines already requires a good deal of money and time. Most people do not or cannot afford to contest unfair fines and opt to pay instead. AI surveillance can impact individuals so greatly that opting to accept harsh outcomes will not be viable. They will be burdened with the onerous task of defending their actions against sophisticated, technical computer programming and systems. Challenging these systems will be extremely costly and punitive.

Police and Public Safety
Unlike human police security and enforcement, A.I. does not have the ability to discern circumstances, reason with emotion, hear explanations and make decisions based on human values and understanding.  With law enforcement being driven by A.I. surveillance, the public will be subject to critical analysis based on algorithyms in place of humans.

Anchor6

Contrary to the seemingly impossible task of stopping A.I. surveillance, almost everyone agrees that it is unwelcome in our society.

Government gaslighting and corporate persistance in rolling out A.I. surveillance technology can be stopped by everyone standing together and rejecting it.

To ban A.I. surveillance people simply need to inform each other and stand together. Millions of people against a very few politicians in Parliament will very quickly dsimantle their attempt to lock us into a digital prison system.

Masses boycotting corporations and sporting events that attempt to introduce A.I. surveillance will quickly result in it’s removal.

For example, accepting A.I. surveillance was a condition of entry at the 2025 Australian Tennis Open. If the public boycott this event in 2026, the organisers will be forced to remove A.I. surveillance.

LET'S inform each other and stand together.
